Rejected Pictures

Theme

Rejected Pictures

We are not interested in technically perfect pictures, nor are we interested in ‘beautiful’ pictures.

We are interested in the pictures that you had rejected, pictures that weren’t perfect, pictures that were ‘wrong’… but have revealed themselves over time.

So show us your out of focus pictures. Show us the pictures that were too dark. Show us the pictures that you accidentally took when you didn’t compose the camera properly.

And tell us more about these ‘rejected’ photographs!* What is special about them? What changed your mind?

Malaysia

Yuji Haikal

Yuji Haikal, a self-taught photographer from Johor, Malaysia, began his artistic journey in 2007 despite having an academic background in Information Technology. After a decade-long hiatus, a heartfelt question from his late father reignited his passion, leading him to embrace black-and-white photography inspired by Jim Marshall’s timeless and intimate style. His work, driven by storytelling and emotion, seeks to reveal overlooked moments and connections in everyday life.

In 2024, Yuji earned international acclaim, winning Book Photographer of the Year at the International Photography Awards for his handmade photobook Why Aren’t You Taking Photos Anymore?—a deeply personal tribute to his father. Alongside his photobook achievements, he has documented Malaysia’s music scene since 2007 and collaborated with notable artists and brands. As Vice President of PPPC, Yuji actively nurtures the local photography community through workshops, photowalks, and forums, continuing his lifelong pursuit of meaning through the lens.”
